Citizen Science-based monitoring

The development and implementation of a Citizen Science concept aims at the voluntary participation of farmers and possibly other stakeholders such as beekeepers, hunters and gardeners. By annually counting and documenting biodiversity indicators on farms, an improved understanding of the links between management and biodiversity is achieved, and the motivation to be mindful of nature and actively promote biodiversity through agriculture. The participating actors are supported scientifically and by the provision of animal and plant profiles, public relations as well assistance in the evaluation of the observations. With regard to the informative value of trend monitoring, Citizen Science approaches can be a valuable supplement to professional monitoring methods. The concept pursued here is in principle long-term and geared towards the entire area of Germany. However, the individual components will initially be developed in a three-year pilot phase and tested in selected regions and with selected participants.
