Development of crop species diversity Genetic diversity of cultivated plants

Diversified agriculture with a wide variety of crop species contributes to the conservation or enhancement of biodiversity and, consequently, to the maintenance of ecological processes such as pest and weed control, pollination, soil fertility, nutrient and water availability, as well as the promotion of carbon sequestration.

The indicator describes changes in crop diversity over a 100-year period in terms of species composition and concentration on cultivated land.

The crop species diversity indicator is measured based on agricultural statistics dating back to 1920. To this end, the cultivated areas of arable crops are compared over time, particularly those of wheat, potatoes and carrots.
