Proportion of land cover classes Landscape composition

The map illustrates, using arable land as an example for land cover classes, the proportions derived from the Digital Basic Landscape Model (Basis-DLM) in relation to the total land area of Germany. In the illustration, the proportions of arable land – calculated for 100 ha hexagons – are grouped at the level of soil-climate regions and shown as an average for the entire survey period from 2017 to 2025.

Regions with the highest proportions of arable land are the North-East German Lowlands, the Uckermark, the Börde landscapes of Central Germany, and the Lower Bavarian hills and plateaus. In contrast, regions with relatively little arable land include, for example, the North-West German Lowlands, which are dominated by intensive forage cultivation (grassland), as well as the grassland-dominated regions in the Alpine foothills and the regions in the Sauerland and Hunsrück where agriculture is practised extensively.

The calculations of the land cover classes are based on the Digital Basic Landscape Model (Basis-DLM) from the Official Topographic-Cartographic Information System (ATKIS).
