The index describes the coverage of woody landscape features (wLF) in relation to agricultural land (AL) and provides a quantitative statement about how much woody structure is available in terms of area within a given reference area. Information on woody vegetation is derived from processed LiDAR data (Light Detection and Ranging). For this purpose, vegetation structures taller than 0.5 m were classified as woody vegetation. The resolution of the raster-based data is 1 x 1 m. Land cover data from the ATKIS Base-DLM were used to calculate the reference area.
In contrast to the "Area Index of Landscape Features" indicator, this indicator measures the actual extent of woody vegetation, including structures such as tree canopies that extend above other objects in the landscape.
