Net nutrient balance Nutrient input

Ecosystems exhibiting low nutrient balances and -loads characteristically provide a more diverse habitat. Consequently, these habitats are frequently characterised as being especially rich in biodiversity. In the absence of a counterbalancing process such as decomposition or biomass extraction, nutrients amass in the atmosphere, soil, and water bodies, precipitating a transition from natural background concentrations to nutrient-rich states. The result of this phenomenon is an alteration in the quality and diversity of habitats, as well as a decline in species richness. The net nutrient balance was calculated on a national scale over the period 2020 to 2022, with the calculation being performed on a three-year average.
