Macrozoobenthos (small animals at the bottom of the water) Biodiversity of small waterbodies

Macrozoobenthos is a good bioindicator due to its importance for material cycles and ecosystem functions in agricultural areas as well as the use of aquatic and terrestrial habitats by merolimnic insects. Macrozoobenthos have high demands on habitat quality and are therefore sensitive to anthropogenic and other ecological influences.

The status indicator contains three pure biodiversity indicators that describe the status and diversity of the macrozoobenthos community: the total number of species, number of particularly sensitive species (EPT taxa, i.e. species of mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies that have a particularly high sensitivity to water quality) and the general biodiversity as the Shannon index (Shannon, 1948). The three indicators can be calculated at the level of agricultural area and small water body types and offer a comprehensive insight into the status of small water body diversity.
