The lack of riparian vegetation due to agricultural use up to the edge of the embankment or even beyond promotes the entry of nutrients and pesticides through erosion and a lack of protection against drift. Soil erosion can also lead to a reduction in habitat diversity in water bodies through sediment input. Reduced habitat diversity, pesticide and nutrient pollution can lead to impairment of biodiversity in small water bodies.
The “riparian vegetation” pollution indicator provides insight into the potential pollution of small water bodies due to reduced growth of towering vegetation on the water bodies. For this purpose, the proportion of areas with towering vegetation (tree and shrub vegetation) within a 20 m radius around the small water body (river vegetation) is determined.
