Small water bodies in the agricultural landscape can be contaminated with pesticides through various entry pathways, for example through drift, run-off, erosion, exchange with groundwater or through inflow from drainage. Plant protection products can have a direct effect on the vitality of macrozoobenthos and thus have a significant influence on the biodiversity of small water bodies.
The pollution indicator “plant protection product contamination” describes the contamination of small water bodies by pesticides as the maximum toxic unit (TUmax) compared to invertebrate organisms for a uniform spectrum of pesticide active ingredients, which are examined in parallel to the macrozoobenthos surveys for each small water body.
